Northern Virginia Carnival of Books

Families from all the Northern Virginia Title I bypass schools gathered at St. Thomas More Cathedral School on March 29, 2007, for a joyous
Carnival of Books!

The evening featured GAMES based on popular children's books and prizes of FREE BOOKS.  Parents also received free parenting materials.

Over 223 children and family members, representing 63 families and all ten Northern Virginia Title I Bypass schools, attended.  Twenty Title I teachers and other adults and helpers made the evening run smoothly.

Families were welcomed to the Carnival of Books by Joanna Bopp, Northern Virginia Area Supervisor and Ann Martin, Program Director.

Students played ten games based on children's books, such as the sight word game Hedgie's Hat based on The Hat by Jan Brett...

and the Frog and Toad game (how many sight words can you read before the frog hops?) based on the children's book Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel.

Students completed a rhyming poem to create a monster for Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.

Carnival of Books 4

The Carnival of Books had lots of smiles!

Students earned a stamp on their ticket for each of the 10 possible activities they completed.  When a student received five stamps on his or her ticket, the child exchanged the ticket for a
FREE BOOK of choice!
