Fall Tidewater DAC 2015

Fall Tidewater Virginia DAC Meeting

The Tidewater Virginia Area NESI Title I team held an area wide family literacy workshop on November 12, 2015, at St. Pius X School in Norfolk.

See photos from the evening in the slide show at the bottom of this page.

The evening began with a light pizza dinner.
Each table had  fall or Thanksgiving WOULD YOU RATHER conversation starters. These conversation starters encouraged the students and their families to read the selections and discuss what they would rather do and why.

Following dinner the families attended a Reader's Theatre presentation put on by the NESI team entitled Joe Bright and the Seven Genre Dudes. This presentation introduced the families to the concept of genre.

After the play, the families visited various genre related stations participating in fun and educational activities.

One station was centered around the mystery genre. Students learned about writing their own mystery stories.

The poetry station offered a power point presentation showing families how to use a poetry writing app.  Students used iPads to go to the app site and write their own poetry.

The non-fiction station provided families with tips for reading non-fiction books. Information about text features was shared.

The Folk Literature station provided learning games, based on folk tales, that the families played together.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the parents completed evaluation forms.

Parent resource materials were available for parents to take home.  All parents and students were able to pick out books to read at home as a door prize.
