The Tidewater area held a DAC workshop entitled PAWS TO READ on Thursday, January 19th at St. Pius X School in Norfolk, Virginia. There were 102 people in attendance.
The evening began at 6:00 with a working pizza dinner. While eating their dinner, families used conversation starter cards as topics for vocabulary developing dinner conversations.
At 6:30 the children were escorted to the Martha Speaks story time. A costumed Martha Speaks and Sylvester were present as Martha Speaks stories were read.
While the children participated in story time, the adults attended a PBS Parent Workshop, presented by Martha Razor, WHRO Early Learning Specialist. Mrs. Razor gave a powerpoint presentation about families and media. She introduced the parents to PBS programs, websites and online educational games and activities.
At the conclusion of the Parent Workshop, the parents picked up their children and visited various classrooms which featured different PBS programs, websites, online educational games and hands on activities. The activity stations are listed below.
- Martha Speaks/Clifford Activity Station
Oral vocabulary, alphabet recognition and letter sounds activities.
- Super Why/Word Girl Activity Station
Letter sorts, alphabet games, reading vocabulary, and reading comprehension activities.
- Electric Company/Cyberchase Activity Station
Phonics, decoding, vocabulary, reading comprehension. math and problem solving activities.
- Computer Lab Activity Station
Tumble Books, Las Vegas Reads, PBS Kids and other educational websites.
The workshop concluded at 8:00 with parents completing workshop evaluations and visiting the Parent Resource Table. All of the workshop evaluation comments were very positive.
