Tidewater VA Mother Goose Workshop, March 2011

Early Literacy
Mother Goose Workshop

Tidewater Virginia
March 10, 2011

On March 10, 2011, the Tidewater area held an Early Literacy Mother Goose Workshop at St. Pius X school in Norfolk with 37 people in attendance.  This workshop was planned by the NESI teachers of preschoolers to fulfill the requirement of individual school Parent Involvement workshops.

The meeting began with a presentation  entitled "A Visit from Mother Goose".  Lisa Sullivan, a children's librarian, gave a costumed presentation for the preschoolers and their families using traditional nursery rhymes, puppets and activities to emphasize the importance of rhyming and repetition in early literacy.  The children actively participated in nursery rhyme based language development activities.

After visiting with Mother Goose, the families engaged in rhyming word and nursery rhyme hands-on activities put together by the Title I teachers.  Every family got their own copies of the games to take home and play.

After the parents completed an evaluation form, each Preschooler received his or her own book entitled Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas.
